Setting Styles of descendants

My DHTML is pretty rusty...

In a stylesheet you can have descendants:

.left_column p{styles for paragraphs in class left_column}

Is there a way to:

1) Read the styles of these descendants?

   I know in IE you can do his:
document.styleSheets[i].cssText

Is there a way to do that in DOM compliant browsers?

2) Set the styles of a descendant? I suppose you could look at
parentNodes in document.getElementsByTagName("*")[i] but is there
another way?
